Just this weekend I saw the Judd Apatow-produced and Paul Feig-directed comedy “Bridesmaids”. Even though I had no idea, who the director was, I felt like going to the cinema and watching this movie. To be honest, I am a big fan of Apatow’s work (especially the hilarious film “The Forty Year Old Virgin” and sweet “Funny People”), therefore I thought than he can’t be tied to a bad project. And to my surprise, I was absolutely right!
The film, written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, has a well-written script with a dozen really funny moments. The movie tells the story of bridesmaids, who were invited to their friend’s wedding. Even though Annie’s (Kristen Wiig, SNL star) life is a mess (she lost her business and boyfriend), she can’t say “No” to her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph, ex-SNL star). The other bridesmaids includes such stars as Rose Byrne (the beautiful Australian actress, best known for her role in the TV show “Damages”), Elle Kemper (“The Office”) and Melissa McCarthy (“Mike and Molly”), who, in my opinion, was more than great!
A lot of people will probably think that this is another ordinary “chick flick”, but that would be a quite inaccurate assumption. This movie is not just about the wedding and the feuding bridesmaids, it goes much deeper. It tries to explore the changes in female friendships throughout different periods of time. It illustrates what real friendship is, it’s not just the glamour. There’s something much more to that. I think the stereotype “chick flick” can’t be referred to this particular film; it’s more of a comedy/romantic comedy, if you ask me. “Bridesmaids” has both, hilariously funny moments and an enormous heart to it.
My Top 5 “Bridesmaids” moments:
1. Scene in the Brazilian restaurant
2. Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) as Annie’s friend (with benefits)
3. Rose Byrne’s unbelievably beautiful wardrobe in the movie, she’s such a cutie
4. Bachelorette party in Fight Club style
5. The Flight to Las Vegas for the bachelorette party
“Bridesmaids” is a great movie populated by funny women. Everyone, who is at least familiar with SNL, knows that Kristen and Maya are hilarious women! They do posses a real comedic talent. Rose Byrne is a delight here. Two other supporting actresses are also very talented and funny. The film is a great mix of smart, funny, raunchy and heartbreaking scenes. Hopefully it will do well in the box office as it really does deserve to be seen by millions of people (not only women).
